Leaning into self-advocacy and social-emotional support
Giana is a Girls Inc. girl who is confident in her opinions and not afraid to advocate for herself. A consistent participant in SSB Summer Camp and Afterschool Experience for over two years, Giana has become comfortable with our staff and her Girls Inc. friends, bravely communicating her everyday thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
What are some of your favorite things to do at Girls Inc.?
Swim time at summer camp (even though I’m still learning to swim), activity challenges during Afterschool, field trips, and the best part—snack time. My favorite field trip was going to the bowling alley.
Why do you like wearing your Girls Inc. shirt?
It stands for Girls Inc. and I like Girls Inc.! It’s also comfy, and I only wear comfy clothes.
What about your Girls Inc. friends makes them good friends?
They are not toxic. They are kind and gentle.
How do the Girls Inc. staff help you be your best when you don’t feel your best?
They let me rest when I need to feel energized, and, when I’m feeling chaotic, they let me listen to ASMR, pick out a Squishmallow to squeeze, and take time in the Calming Corner. Sometimes they also give hugs!
Why is Girls Inc. a fun place to be?
We get to do “challenges” in class, and sometimes there’s fun prizes (like extra snacks) for completing them. Sometimes I get to use my own stuff to complete the challenge. Last week we did a balancing challenge, and my Lego girl I brought from home was the perfect object to balance.
