Building curiosity and connection
Second-grader Brooklyn attended SSB Summer Camp in 2025 and is now a participant in our Afterschool Experience and recreational gymnastics. She loves connecting with friends and is excited by including her family on her everyday experiences outside of home.
What are some of your favorite things to do at Girls Inc.?
I like seeing my friends I made at Summer Camp everyday during Afterschool, Afterschool brain breaks, and when we learn about things around the world—like famous statues and landmarks. Last week, we created our own Macchu Picchu!
(Having snow cones at Summer Camp was really fun, too.)
Do you have a favorite Girls Inc. memory so far?
I liked when we got to bring our families on the last day of Camp! I got to play Legos and make a portrait with my mom and grandma. We also got to meet my friends’ families and spend time all together.
Talk about what it means to feel “included” and “supported”. How do you feel that at Girls Inc.?
“Included” is like when people let you in to play a game. If someone was by themself, it’s like one person saying, “Come and play with us.” They’re including them in the game.
At Girls Inc., I feel supported when Miss Tina helps me with my homework—she helps me get my division problems right. Or if I drop something, my friends or the staff help me pick it up, and when I’m in gymnastics learning a trick, Coach Olivia helps me get it right.
How does Girls Inc. make you feel strong, smart, and bold?
I’m strong because I’m a leader—I follow directions. I feel smart when I learn new things.
I feel bold, because I used to be afraid of spiders and now I’m not, because once I saw one and [one of my Girls Inc. friends] helped me not feel afraid anymore.
What would you say to another girl who is considering participating at Girls Inc.?
We do fun activities and different programs like field trips. Girls Inc. is great for having fun and getting smart!
